Ohio Quotes – December 19, 2017

Redshirt sophomore safety Javon Hagan
On the team’s first day in the Bahamas yesterday…
“Well first off, the weather’s great. It feels like home – I’m from Jacksonville, Florida, so it feels good to finally get some heat shining on me. We enjoyed the beaches yesterday, that was definitely a highlight of the day, and just being in water – being from Ohio, we don’t really have the chance to get in water that much because of the cold weather – so just to feel water on our skin again was very fun yesterday.”

On getting back on the practice field Tuesday…
“It was a good practice. We had guys focused when we touched the field. It felt good to have fun when we were off the field, but as soon as we got on the field everyone was keyed in and focused on their assignments and focused on our objective. It felt good to actually get back on the field and start practicing again.”

On what challenges the UAB offense presents…
“They have a good, young back, [Spencer Brown], he’s a freshman. He’s actually aiming to break a rushing record, so we have to stop him. They have a lot of good receivers as well, so as a whole, they have a good offense. We’ve just been focused on them and watching film and figuring out what we can do to win the game.”

On what the defense needs to do to win the game…
“We’re focused on turnovers. Turnovers can slow any offense down. If we can force turnovers and get our offense the ball back so we can put up more points, that will slow them down best.”

On what other game week activities he’s excited for
“I’m definitely excited to swim with dolphins today. I just want to get back in the water and enjoy myself. I did well this semester so I feel like this is a big vacation.”

Ohio defensive coordinator Jimmy Burrow
On how the team liked the first day in the Bahamas…
“Great weather. It’s warm, even hot. We like it, so it’s a good day for the Bobcats.”

On how the first practice went on Tuesday…
“Practice was good. We wanted to practice fast. It was a short practice but the guys moved around well, we got a lot of things done. I think they got back into the swing of why we’re here, and that’s to try to win a ballgame. The guys were excited to practice. Any time for us that you can get outside in December, we’re good to go.”

On the challenges that UAB’s offense presents…
“Well, they really run the ball well. They can throw the ball equally well. They’re just a dual-threat offense. The quarterback is dual threat, they can put running backs in that will catch passes. It’s a multi-dimensional offense that’s hard to defend. It all starts with their running game, but again, their passing game and play action off of that running game are hard to defend also.”

On the team’s preparation the rest of the week…
“We do a little something different tomorrow. It’s a pretty lengthy walk-through for us, and then we come back out the day before the game and we move around fast. It’s kind of different from the old school style of walking through the day before the game. We’ve done it opposite for a few years. We feel like the day before the game, just to move around with a lot of energy and practicing fast is a good way to take us into game day.”

On what he’s excited for off the field…
“Well, we’re excited for the beach and the pool. Those are the things that are awesome for our football team and us as coaches with our families also.”
